type='text'>

Three books I've enjoyed lately:

Red-Flannel Hash and Shoo-Fly Pie, Lila Perl
A 1960s cookbook about regional American foods is already right up my alley, but this one was also one of the very first books illustrated by Eric Carle. He uses woodcuts, rather than the tissue-paper collage style that he's best known for.

The Redbreast, Jo Nesbo
My love affair with Scandinavian crime fiction is ongoing. This one is a dark, occasionally funny noir with two intertwining stories, one a modern hardboiled procedural and the other historical fiction about the Norwegian fascists who cooperated with the occupying Nazis and fought on the Russian front in WWII.

Hot Stuff: Disco and the Remaking of American Culture, Alice Echols
Cultural-history kind of thing, focusing heavily on disco's larger social effects. If you like this, you might also like Peter Shapiro's Turn the Beat Around.

Four albums:

Amanaz - Africa
Reissue of a 70s album from Zambia's Zam-rock scene. If you like 70s African psych/rock groups like Blo or The Witch, you'll probably dig this. Bass and fuzz, English and Bemba.

Balun - Memoria Textil
Dreamy vocals and a mix of organic (including accordion and violin) and electronic (including chiptune-ish stuff)--they call it IDM folk-pop.

Getatchew Mekuria & The Ex - Moa Anbesa
Septuagenarian Ethiopian saxophone legend gets together with Dutch avant-punks (and horn players from everyone's favorite ICP, the Instant Composer's Pool Orchestra), and it winds up sounding a little like 70s Ethio-jazz and a little like No-Wave.

V/A - Lagos Disco Inferno
Released by the guy behind the Voodoo Funk blog, who spent three years crate-digging in Africa. Your reaction to the phrase '70s Nigerian disco' will probably determine whether you'd enjoy this album, but, just in case you're on the fence, here's a Youtube promo.

Three artists:

Rockwell Kent
He did illustrations for editions of Moby Dick, Leaves of Grass and Erewhon, among many others. If you see an interlibrary loan librarian, tell 'em I said thanks.

Charley Harper
I only just learned there's a line of Charley Harper skate shoes, from Alien Workshop. This same company commissioned Mr. Dibbs, one of my favorite turntablists, to do the soundtrack for a skate video.

Kenojuak Ashevak
Inuit printmaker/sculptor, and one of the pioneers of Inuit modern art.

An AV Club commenter brought it up, and now I can't get it out of my head: did AMC buy the rights to a bunch of old music for Mad Men, and are they now using it for Breaking Bad?

Between Fight the Big Bull, Onetribe and Lamplighter Coffee, I think I'd like to visit Richmond. That 25-cent charge is not a rental fee but a goad to return it promptly. As you note, other people are waiting for the book, hence the library’s decision not to let you renew it. That the fee is inadequate to provide a proper incentive, that the library does not instead charge $25 a day or $250 a day or impose a vigorous flogging (as described in the no-doubt-renewable “Mutiny on the Bounty”), bespeaks ineffectual enforcement tactics, not the freedom to keep a popular book past its due date."--Randy Cohen, the New York Times' Ethicist

"Hardly anyone (except for the very stupid and very lazy) has ever accepted the ideals of beauty and/or desirability as set forth by their respective cultures' Fashionable Intelligence."--Rusty McMann

Here No link, because it's not online anywhere, but worth looking for, if you're into that kind of thing.

Vaguely relatedly, I drank my first bottle of my first batch of homebrew on Saturday. Didn't go blind. Even less relatedly, I recently learned that Midwest Supplies, a big winemaking/homebrewing store in Minneapolis, also sells hydroponic equipment. Not quite black, not too thick, and heavily carbonated, especially for its style. It's okay. Not as complex a set of flavors as Old Rasputin or Storm King, and not as heady an aroma. The label looks like a kid drew it, which isn't necessarily an insult. Pretty drinkable for a Russian imperial stout, which isn't necessarily a compliment. Might be named after the late comedian, which would be awesome if it were true.

(Side note--Red Fox is $8/6-pack at Colonial Wine and Spirits (this is probably a limited-time offer). That's on the cheap end for craft beers, and it's in the Russian imperial stout bargain basement. If you like the style, the price might make this beer worth a try.)

Two books I read in the last couple days: Got and Cake, by D. Hardboiled street-lit stuff. Here's a brief excerpt:

This shit is like a bad dream if you've ever had one, one of those really mindfuckin' ones you get on the nights you don't go to sleep high. That's actually why you always try to go to sleep high--cuz then it's nothing but black space and the sound of your own snoring.

If you like crime fiction or hip-hop music, or authors like Kenji Jasper, Donald Goines or Jim Thompson, you might give dude's books a try.

Another quick read: Michael Pollan's Food Rules. Less a book and more a set of epigrams, this thin tome lays out most of the gist of In Defense Of Food in easy snacking format (I think of 'Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much' as more of an amuse-bouche). It's kind of an antithesis to the Eat This Not That books, which operate from the first premise that you're going to eat a lot of prepackaged convenience foods and stuff from national restaurant franchises. You can read it in half an hour. You can read it again.

Unexpected good thing about the Friday Night Lights movie: several Public Enemy songs.

Song, by W. Snodgrass

Sweet beast, I have gone prowling,
a proud rejected man
who lived along the edges
catch as catch can;
in darkness and in hedges
I sang my sour tone
and all my love was howling
conspicuously alone.

I curled and slept all day
or nursed my bloodless wounds
until the squares were silent
where I could make my tunes
singular and violent.
Then, sure as hearers came
I crept and flinched away.
And, girl, you've done the same.

A stray from my own type,
led along by blindness,
my love was near to spoiled
and curdled all my kindness.
I find no kin, no child;
only the weasel's ilk.
Sweet beast, cat of my own stripe,
come and take my milk.

(Both from Heart's Needle)

Somebody sent me a gumbo recipe. I'm pretty sure he meant to send it to somebody else with a similar email address, but, hey, gumbo recipe. Here it is:

1 ts salt
2 tb oil
2 tb flour
2 qt water
1 bay leaf
2 onions, chopped
2 lb shrimp
1 pt oysters
1/2 lb crabmeat, fresh or frozen
1/8 ts red pepper (optional)
3 c okra, or 1 t gumbo file'
1 cn tomatoes, 16 oz.
3 garlic pods (optional)

Peel shrimp before cooking & devein. Make a roux... use oil and flour in a heavy iron skillet. Over medium-low heat, place flour in the oil and let cook , slow , until the flour starts to brown. Adjust heat so that the flour does not burn. You want the flour to turn dark brown, stir as needed but, keep dat flour from burning. When you are satisfied that the roux is as dark as possible without burning, add the cleaned shrimp to it for a few minutes, stiring constantly. Set the shrimproux mixture aside. Smother okra in another 2 T of oil, along with the chopped onions. Add can of tomatoes when the okra is nearly cooked. Then add water, bay leaf, garlic, salt and pepper. Add shrimp and roux to this mixture and let cook slowly for 20-30 minutes. Add oysters and crabmeat, cook for another 10-15 minutes. NOTE If ya don't use okra, you can use gumbo file', which is crushed sassafras leaves, available in the spices rack of the grocery store. When using file' instead of okra, add it only after the heat is off... don't simmer or boil file'... it gets stringy. Let gumbo stand a few minutes after adding file' before serving. Serve over cooked rice.

"If you love someone you should say it often/
You never know when they'll be layin' in a coffin."

First Snow, by Mary Oliver, from American Primitive

The snow
began here
this morning and all day
continued, its white
rhetoric everywhere
calling us back to why, how,
whence such beauty and what
the meaning; such
an oracular fever! flowing
past windows, an energy it seemed
would never ebb, never settle
less than lovely! and only now,
deep into night,
it has finally ended.
The silence
is immense,
and the heavens still hold
a million candles; nowhere
the familiar things:
stars, the moon,
the darkness we expect
and nightly turn from. In an early effort at cross-marketing, the show fed the toys fed the comics fed the (first, animated) movie. And don't even get me started on the politics.

I mean, don't get me wrong--I had the bridge-laying tank and the hovercraft and alternate-colorway versions of people and all kinds of stuff. I'm pretty sure I sent away for William 'Refrigerator' Perry. I didn't know any better, because I was a kid. And, if you're like me, one of the items you're most curious about is the reference to "an old LL Cool J remix" on page 114.

Well, here's the relevant sentence. She's talking about some people she met while campaigning for governor. "They treated us to slices of homemade rhubarb pie, then gave us a whole blueberry pie that we shared with friends after our 800-mile, 40-hour round-trip, driven to the sound of the Black Eyed Peas and an old LL Cool J remix we found in the glove box." (More interesting claim on that same page--she hints that Obama bit her 'change' theme.)

I'm underwhelmed. Incidentally, though, Uncle L doesn't have any remix albums (well, there's a 12" compilation from '93, but it was vinyl-only), so either it was a cassingle, or she's playing fast and loose with the facts. As fun as it is to imagine the candidate listening to a remix of 'To Da Break of Dawn' or 'Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag' for forty hours, I think the latter is more likely.

Vintage Technics type='text'>

Two poems from Angie Estes' Tryst:

Take Cover

and couvre feu, cover the fire
because when the bell sounds, it means
curfew, it is mellow-drama, facsimile
of a tryst, trusted
meeting place, waiting
like a shelter or decoy, duck blind
with the perfect vision
of the Venetian blind; a number of thin
horizontal slats that may be raised
or lowered with one cord, all set
at a desired angle. Love too we're told
is blind, but desire,
as Aristotle knew, is all
angle, and so he gave us the math
to keep track of our loves: Number,
he said, has two senses: what is counted
or countable, and that by which
we count. Remember
to cover the rosemary in winter, uncover
the basil before the sun
comes up, and when you take
cover, cover your head with your hands
and forearms, as we learned in school, once
you have crouched under
your desk. In January, beneath the roof
of the house, a sparrow curves
in the scroll of a corbel, and soon
at Carnevale a mask will be held
at half-mast like the lid
of a casket before it lies under
the grass. How much ground
have you covered
today? You always take
all the covers, it's true. But do not
take cover under a tree
during a storm--your body will lift
its wick to light, and you will gleam
like Venus just before dawn: a satellite
in the atelier where true
and tree are related, unable to choose
between heaven and earth, to make seems
come true.

Gloss

My mother said that Uncle Fred had a purple
heart, the right side of his body
blown off in Italy in World War II,
and I saw reddish blue figs
dropping from the hole
in his chest, the violet litter
of the jacaranda, heard the sentence
buckle, unbuckle like a belt
before opening the way
a feed sack opens all
at once when the string is pulled
in just the right place:
the water in the corn pot
boils, someone is slapped, and summer
rain splatters as you go out
to slop the hogs. We drove home
over the Potomac while the lights spread
their tails across the water, comets
leaving comments on a blackboard
sky like the powdered sugar
medieval physicians blew
into patients' eyes to cure
their blindness. At dusk,
fish rise, their new moons
etching the water like Venn diagrams
for Robert's Rules of Order
surfaced at last, and I would like to
make a motion, move
to amend: point of information, point
of order. I move to amend
the amendment and want
to call the question, table
the discussion, bed
some roses, and roof the exclamation
of the Great Blue heron sliding
overhead, its feet following flight
the way a period haunts
a sentence: she said that
on the mountain where they grew
up, there were two kinds
of cherries--red heart
and black heart--both of them
sweet.
