To my mind, the Onion AV Club's occasional junk-food taste tests are far more entertaining than, say, taquitos.net or phood, which seem geared less toward snide mockery and more toward obsessive fandom (or junkfoodreviews, which is like Youtube comments about food) (McSweeney's has covered some of this territory as well). From their review of Sonic's Mac'n'Cheese Bites: The good news is that if you live near a Sonic, you can snack on these bad boys whenever you like, since Sonic serves its full menu all day and all night. The bad news is that if you live near a Sonic, you probably reside in some hick shithole.

I'm a big fan of Albuquerque's free weekly, The Alibi. For the longest, they had a "speed eater" column which covered this territory without reflexive snidiness or irony or fanaticism. Moving to Arkansas, I even half considered aping such a thing for the then-struggling hipsterish Weekend-y section of the Log Cabin Democrat.

Driving through hick shithole after hick shithole last week, we passed Sonic after Sonic advertising "happy hour" or "drink specials" to my considerable confusion. Finally I realized, after passing a couple first/"last chance" liquor stores, that Sonic was probably the first and possibly the last opportunity for the indigenous hickoids to enjoy a happy hour or drink special. Besides, the Sonic limeaid is a better mixer than those half-gallon margarita-mixes that litter dorm rooms across this debased land.
