A couple employment-related tidbits from this month's Harper's Index (this month's issue also has a great article by Jeff Sharlet about the Christianization of the US military, but it's not online yet (edit: here's a .pdf):

Chances that an American who has become unemployed since December 2007 is a man: 4 in 5
Percentage of all U.S. men over twenty who are now unemployed or not seeking work: 31
Estimated percentage of Bush Administration appointees who are currently unemployed: 70
Minimum number of jobs currently open in Antarctica: 676
