You know, I was way into GI Joe as a kid, but I have no desire to see the movie now.
The show was a program-length commercial produced by a toy company, designed to circumvent then-current bans on the amount of advertising in children's television. In an early effort at cross-marketing, the show fed the toys fed the comics fed the (first, animated) movie. And don't even get me started on the politics.
I mean, don't get me wrong--I had the bridge-laying tank and the hovercraft and alternate-colorway versions of people and all kinds of stuff. I'm pretty sure I sent away for William 'Refrigerator' Perry. I didn't know any better, because I was a kid. I loved it at the time, but any nostalgia I feel nowadays is for my childhood, not a bunch of plastic crap.
